 Bilbao
Airport is situated to the north of Bilbao, about
3 miles from the centre of the city. The airport
handles just over 4 million passengers each year
and ranks in the top 12 of Spain's airports. In
the year 2000, the airport had a new terminal constructed
which was designed by the world famous architect,
Santiago Calatrava whose other works include the
new World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New
York City and the Olympic Sports Complex, Athens.
Due to the Terminal's white, winged design it has
earned the name "La Paloma" or "The
Dove".
Situated at the top of Spain on the Bay of Biscay,
Bilbao Airport is convenient for travellers visiting
the north of the country to tour the Basque Country
and visit the nearby towns and cities including
Santander, Vitoria-Gasteiz and San Sebastian. The
city of Bibao itself is an important commercial
centre as well as being rich in cultural attractions.
